WG3. Environmental and economic impact

Objectives

  • To review the micropollutants fate in wastewater treatment and to communicate this issue in Europe.

  • To review water reuse activities worldwide.

  • To locate impacts of the economic crises to wastewater treatment, water recycling and tariff policies.

  • To assist TFs of other WGs on economic and cost benefit analysis issues.

  • To provide guidelines or best practices for environmental assessment of conventional and innovative technologies of wastewater treatment and collection systems.

  • To perform an environmental life-cycle assessment (LCA) regarding greenhouse gas and odor emissions from wastewater treatment systems.

  

Task forces and deliverables

The following task forces have been defined:

 Aims and scope: This TF will seek to review the micropollutants in wastewater treatment worldwide and to communicate this issue in Europe.

 Deliverables: D1.1: Opinion paper (month 12), D1.2: e-learning course (month 24), D1.3: Electronic questionnaire (month 36).

 

TF 3.1: Review paper on recycle water perception

TF 3.2: Research proposal on “Differences in approaches over wastewater treatment for countries under economic crises”

Aims and Scope: This TF will seek to provide guidelines or best practices for environmental assessment of conventional and innovative technologies of wastewater treatment and collection systems.

TF 3.5: Greenhouse Gas and Odour Emission Task Force

Joint Task Force on Micropollutants (WG1 & WG3) publishes in Environmental Science and Pollution Research Journal

The Joint Task Force on Micropollutants (WG1 & WG3) has recently published the article "Status of hormones and painkillers in wastewater effluents across several European states—considerations for the EU watch list concerning estradiols and diclofenac" in the Environmental Science and Pollution Research Journal (Springer).

 

WG3 Meeting, Istanbul (Turkey) 2014

The meeting started with the welcome speech of the local organizer and some practical issues, followed by an introduction of WG1 (Gerasimos Lyberatos) and WG3 (Konstantinos Tsagarakis) chairs.

Then, the COST Action chair (Juan M. Lema) presented the concept of the book, the final output of the Action summarizing the main achievements of all WGs.

 

After the coffee break took place the individual working group meeting, followed by the individual task force meetings.

 

Workshop of WG3, Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Germany) 2013

The first workshop of WP3 “Environmental and Economic Impact” took place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Germany). The aims of the workshop were to consolidate the task forces defined during the Thraki Palace conference in order to tackle the biggest problems concerning ecological and economic impact of future wastewater treatment plants, to review the state of the art and to shape our ideas on micropollutants, greenhouse gases and odors, and concepts for recycled water reuse.

In total, 21 participants attended workshop (details in the attendant list) from 11 countries.
